Spond and bibs get mentioned in the same breath, but they are not really rivals. They solve different halves of the same evening. Spond is a team-management app: scheduling, RSVPs, messaging and payments. bibs is a team balancer: it turns your squad into two fair sides and drops the teamsheet in the chat. Knowing which job you actually need sorted makes the choice easy.
What Spond is great at
Spond does the admin properly. It handles fixtures and reminders, tracks who has said yes, and collects subs and match fees through the app, with the organiser able to see at a glance who has paid. For a formal club, several teams, or a group where chasing money is the real headache, that is genuinely useful, and the core app is free.
Two things to know: your players download the Spond app and make an account to use it, and while the app is free, collecting money through it carries standard payment-processing fees.
What Spond does not do
Spond does not pick your teams. It will tell you the ten people who are coming on Monday, and then it leaves you exactly where you started: staring at ten names, picking sides by hand or captains in the car park. If the thing that causes the arguments in your group is the teams, not the admin, Spond does not touch it.
What bibs does
bibs is a free football team balancer. Rate your squad once, privately, mark who is in, and it builds two matched sides with a balance score, then shares the teamsheet to your group chat. Nobody but the gaffer installs anything. It is fair from the very first game, the ratings stay private, and it is free with no fees of any kind. Over a season it keeps a win table and a form guide, and every result quietly tunes the balance.

Which should you use?
- Pick Spond if your main pain is admin and money across one or more organised teams, and you do not mind your players installing an app.
- Pick bibs if your main pain is picking fair teams for a weekly 5, 6 or 7-a-side, and you want zero friction for your players.
- Run both if you want the admin handled and the teams balanced. Loads of groups collect subs in one place and generate the teams in bibs. They do not step on each other.
If it is the teams that spark the group-chat inquest every week, that is the gap bibs was built to fill. See why gaffers use bibs, or if you are here because your old app is winding down, read the Teamer closing guide.
